Why we ride (part 2)…

My entry into cycling was on the knobby wheels of a mountain bike. A 2005 Gary Fisher Tassajara that was purchased when my wife and I decided it was time to remind ourselves how much fun we had on a bicycle when we were kids. The fact that we were going to have a new, fun form of exercise was [...]

Keep the wheels spinning…

It’s easy to justify, after accomplishing a huge milestone like the MS150, to let a week go by without cycling. Problem is…that week can easily become two….or three in the blink of an eye. Next thing you know, a month has gone by. In my case, a full twelve days passed before I threw my hands up in total frustration [...]

MS 150 – Day Two – Highlights

“We’re not actually riding 60 miles on a bike tomorrow, are we?” Those were my mildly sarcastic words to Joel, Marco, Bill, Frankie and Robert in our hotel room in Beeville late Saturday evening. MS 150 – Day One – Highlights

The MS 150 was an amazing experience. A huge milestone for my cycling and a great cause to ride for. It was an adventure I won’t soon forget. Here are some Day One highlights: Freezing your Gatorade Propel is a nice way to have a cold drink many miles down the road. Leaving your Propel in the freezer and making [...]

It is done. 150 miles. On a bike. The Valero MS150!

The gravity of the situation continues to sink in. This weekend, I joined nearly 3000 cyclists in the Valero MS150 – “Bike to the Beach”. This event is a 150 mile bicycle ride from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, Texas. Joel, Marco, Jennifer and Bill – my trusted cycling companions – joined me on this adventure. It was…incredible, amazing, grueling, [...]

Breaking records…eating…butterflies…

On the drive to Helotes, Texas to join Joel for a 26-mile ride, I must have killed a dozen or more butterflies. In particular, American Snout Butterflies, which are currently swarming here in San Antonio. At any given moment on the road you’ll see 10-20 of them fluttering in the air ahead of you. It’s a tad depressing to see [...]

Cycling at almost 12,000 feet…

This isn’t a story about a cyclist that jumps out of an airplane. It’s about several cyclists I witnessed on Trail Ridge Road during my recent Colorado vacation. This cyclist, like others we saw, braves thin air with little oxygen and sometimes heavy traffic on U.S. Highway 34 which has virtually no shoulder. I was impressed and amazed. I captured [...]
