Garmin announced a few days ago that they will be releasing two new devices in their line of cycling GPS computers. The one that has me most excited is the Garmin Edge 705. As a very satisfied owner of the Garmin Edge 305, I was chomping at the bit to learn more about what this new unit has to offer.

From what I’ve read, the following new features are being introduced:

  • COLOR! Yes, a color screen makes its debut.
  • Mapping – the unit includes a basemap but for more detailed maps the unit is compatible with Garmin mapping software that can be downloaded to a MicroSD card.
  • Turn-by-turn routing – now that the Edge supports cartography, the unit is able to provide turn-by-turn directions to get to a destination (a helpful feature if you’re on your bike and get totally lost. The Edge 305 has a “back to start” which is helpful, but just points you in the right direction versus telling you where you need to turn).
  • Power – the unit will measure your power output via its compatibility with several third-party units.

More to come on this exciting development that is music to this Bike Geek’s ears!
