David (bro-in-law) and Tanner (nephew) have expressed an interest in participating in the 2008 Valero MS-150 “Bike to the Beach” event in October. As a result, we’ve been getting more consistent on our rides and are starting to increase ride distance, duration and intensity.
I’m very proud of both of them!
I’m also very aware of the physical challenges associated with completing the MS-150 since I’m proud to say I did just that in 2006.
Wish us luck!

Hey, my name is Mike and I hail from America’s high five, Michigan.
I am leading a 150 mile ride this summer, with about 5-10 cyclists, across the mitten and when I googled, cycling 150 miles in a day, your blog was the top result.
To the point, I was wondering if you could share some basic training and ride plans that you use when you are gearing up for a 1.5 century. I am bringing a couple people who haven’t ever cycled long distance. We are beginning to train in May, and so I am just gathering info from all around the web to help step them up in distance in reasonable steps. This will also be the further I’ve ever ridden in one day. So any input/leads to sites where you have found good info would be awesome.
Good luck this year on the ride to the beach.

Mike,
When I trained for the MS150 in 2006, a majority of our rides were between 25-32 miles with hills. We were giving up a little in distance by including routes that pushed us harder with terrain. We rode at least twice a week. A few weeks before the MS150 we did a 1/2 century ride (50 miles) along the MS150 route. This approach worked well for us and in hindsight I think we probably would have added a few more long-distance, endurance rides to better prepare.
