Trek Valencia Experience : Ride #7 (of 10)
Ride Type: Moderate ride to/from work
Distance: 20.76 miles
The weather here in San Antonio has been quite interesting. I’ve had morning commutes to work with temperatures in the mid-30′s and afternoon commutes home where it was almost – dare I say – “balmy”. Short winter days also mean more interaction with limited visibility but also a chance to catch an amazing sunset on the bike ride home!
I was able to get two bicycle commutes in last week and here are the latest observations on the Valencia:
- Pedals: Increasingly frustrating me by not providing solid traction when I need it most. On a few occasions I’ve hopped out of the saddle after becoming impatient with a hill only to nearly slip off the pedal. Not good. I’ve now decided that the pedals are gonna have to go! For easy recreational riding I’m sure they’d be fine but for bicycle commuters working with terrain, wet weather, etc. they are too much of a potential liability.
- Drivetrain: The 24-speed Shimano gear set is still shifting pretty smoothly despite a few commutes in the past few weeks in wet weather. The gear ratio continues to grow on me – providing a solid high gear for fast descents and just enough in the low gear department to get you up even the steep, ornery hills.
- Bontrager “Race Lite” tires: They continue to repel glass, metal objects and more that are an unfortunate and common reality on some sections of my bike commute to work. I also continue to like the 700×32 tire size – I hadn’t appreciated how much wider they are until a recent road ride where my road bike was next to the Valencia with its tiny 700×23 wheels! The extra width has been an asset as the tire seems to confidently deflect rocks and other objects that get in its way.
So far, the Valencia continues to prove that it is ready, willing and able to handle a full year of bicycle commuting in 2009. It is likely I will end up with over 2,000 miles on this bike alone. So far, so good…
Hello, I found your blog through my research about the Trek Valencia. I was just wondering if you know the exact weight of the guitar when stock?
Great reviews so far by the way!
haha.. I meant the bike!.. sorry, I was playing my guitar before, and for some reason the word stuck =)
Hi Jay!
For a moment I thought “guitar” was slang for bicycle. Funny!
I think I have it written down somewhere but I believe the bike weighed around 25 pounds direct from the factory.
Fully loaded with a bicycle rack, headlights it was right at 30 pounds.
Hey! Love the post. Have been following the Valenica reports religiously. What kind of pedals would you like to see on the bike? Do you have an idea of what pedals you’re looking at to replace the stock ones? Love San Anonio, hope all is well.
Happy Rides! E
Eric,
Great to hear from you and thanks for reading my blog posts about the Valencia. Please extend my thanks to the Valencia’s design team. They’ve done well!
I am researching pedal replacements. Possibly a Shimano A530 dual use SPD/platform since I really would like to clip into my pedals once I’m away from the intense parts of my ride.
When I use the Shimano A530 on my commuting rig, if I have cleats on it is uncomfortable to pedal on the flat side of the pedal. The flat side of the pedal is wide enough, but nothing on it is grippy so I wouldn’t expect to stop slipping off of it (especially if you have cleats pushing into the bottom of the pedal). When I am doing a grocery run the flat pedals are fine, but I wouldn’t want to be aggressiive in them. Consider the slightly heavier Shimano PD-M324 mountain bike equivalents which has a little more traction on it if you are worried about slipping off. I wouldn’t be confident about comfort if you are trying to use cleats on the flat side though.
If you want to see how they look, take a look at the red Schwinn parked on the other side of the entrance tomorrow.

Robert,
Thanks for the insight on the A530. I’ll have to give the PD-M324 some consideration. My thought behind the dual-use pedal was to use the flat side for slow, non-aggressive cycling in heavy traffic (e.g. right outside the office on Huebner and Fredericksburg) and then immediately clip-in once I get a few miles away from the worst traffic.
I’ll try to remember to take a peek at your setup tomorrow.
Thanks for the insight and for visiting the blog!!
Be safe!
Justin
Wow, that is a gorgeous sunset!!
Thanks Dottie! Sunsets like that one are why I always have a camera with me on my commutes.
