Last weekend I biked 110 miles from San Antonio to Austin, TX as a participant in the annual Tour de Cure event. This was my first major ride in 2011 and in a word it was : Incredible.
Why?
- A great cause: I was able to raise over $500 to support the American Diabetes Association and the 24 million children and adults that have diabetes.
- Incredible support: Best support on an organized ride that I’ve experienced. Each rest stop had many snack options including peanut butter sandwiches, nuts, oranges, bananas and more. End of ride catering was amazing with burgers and rolls from the likes of Texas Roadhouse. Great shuttle support between hotels. In general, a well-organized and efficient event.
- Great route: The route between San Antonio and Austin was well-marked and took advantage of low-traffic, country roads. The scenery was relaxing – farm fields stretching out to the horizon and in South Texas the mostly northeast route benefited from typical southerly winds (GPS Details : Day 1 Route, Day 2 Route)
A big thanks to everyone that donated in my name to this great cause (there’s still time if you’d like to donate) and to my family for being there at the finish line with big signs (literally) of support.

Proud of you, hon. Was a pleasure to cheer you on.
Looking to try and get a team of riders from my workplace to do charity rides beginning with Soldier Ride San Antonio this November. Any clue about what a Team Captain should be/do?
I just found your Blog site. Looking very good so far!
I recognize you! From the Tour de Cure, well I really remember the jersey.
